Education in Emergencies and Protracted Crises EiEPC - 2019-2023

To transform both the availability and quality of education provision in countries affected by natural and man-made emergencies and prolonged crises. 5. This programme will prioritise education for children in so-called ‘forgotten’ crises and emergencies, especially in Africa. It aims to reach around 250,000 vulnerable children, reducing the time they spend out of school by providing a range of formal and non-formal learning opportunities, including ‘catch-up’ classes. It will focus both on access and improving the quality of education, including much needed-psychosocial support. It will also help teachers to support children who are learning in a new language.

Working with Nature to Protect People - STREAM

Unlocking the humanitarian potential of Nature-based Solutions Reducing disaster risk by cultivating healthy ecosystems, safe communities, and thriving businesses. This project is part of the Nile Basin Initiative, a Red Cross program aiming to use the power of nature to reduce disaster risks with communities across the Nile River Basin. Over the course of 20 years, it seeks to test and then scale nature-based solutions together with communities in four countries: Sudan, South-Sudan, Ethiopia, and Uganda. The program explicitly shifts from sectoral projects, limited in time and space, to locally-initiated experimentation that addresses underlying causes of vulnerability together with expert partners. Integrating nature in humanitarian efforts is quite a paradigm shift for the Red Cross, but one that is already well underway. By experimenting and scaling nature-based solutions in the Nile River Basin, we contribute to this paradigm shift.

Sudan Economic Impact and Reform (SEIR) Programme

To support Sudan’s economic recovery and lay the groundwork for growth by i. Mitigating the impact of economic reforms on the poorest and most vulnerable through social impact mitigation programming. ii. Providing technical assistance (TA) to the Government of Sudan to lead and implement a successful economic reform programme in line with IMF guidance supported by a comprehensive, cross government Poverty Reduction Strategy. iii. Helping prepare the Government of Sudan for debt relief under the Highly Indebted Poor Country (HIPC) process so that in future it is able to access resources from International Financial Institutions (IFIs). The programme will support Sudan’s progress towards SDG1 – halving the numbers of people living in poverty – by reducing the risk of economic collapse and supporting Sudan’s economy to become a platform for future growth. Reducing inflation and arresting the collapse of the currency will alleviate the number of people requiring humanitarian aid.

2020 - Ethiopia/Sudan Population Movement (Tigray)

Displaced populations currently depend on already limited access to clean, safe, and potable drinking water and water for domestic use in the host communities. If not controlled, it may bring competition and violence to access this scarce commodity between the refugees and the host communities. Further to this, the prevalence of COVID-19 and the potential for community transmission within informal and temporary shelter areas and arrangements must be considered as an essential focus in the need for water provision, hygiene training and improving hygiene practices

2020 - Sudan Floods

Sudan is facing one of the worst flooding situations seen for more than 70 years. According to initial reports approximately 100 people have died, at least 100,000 homes have been damaged or destroyed, and more half a million people are affected. These figures are expected to increase significantly as access to the affected areas remains extremely challenging and assessments are still ongoing. Humanitarian needs are rapidly increasing as the country faces multiple shocks beside the floods, including the economic crisis, violence and disease outbreaks, and more rainfall is expected. The Government of Sudan has declared a three month nationwide state of emergency, appealing for assistance from civil society and humanitarian national and international organizations to respond to the flood affected population. Almost every state has been affected and according to the Ministry of Irrigation, the river Nile recorded the highest water level in Khartoum since 1912, over 17.62 metres. Rapid needs assessments indicate significant damage to houses, properties and livelihoods, disruption of transport networks, roads and water and sanitation infrastructure, and lack of access to markets and hea

In 2025, ICSP enabled GOAL Sudan to sustain critical health and nutrition services for 57,199 people in Dilling despite a year‑long siege, movement restrictions and severe shortages of vaccines and essential medicines. Lifesaving primary health care remained available, with clients receiving clinical evaluations at PHCs and sourcing medicines through private providers when supplies were depleted. Vulnerability to health shocks was reduced through continuous screening, referral and community‑level health education, while preparedness improved through updated emergency plans, trained Rapid Response Teams and coordinated AWD response efforts, helping local authorities manage health crises under extremely constrained conditions.. Social Behaviour Change (SBC) approaches are used to build community and household capacity to care for their own health – including Care Groups, Men’s Health Groups, and community based reproductive health volunteers who work to increase the demand for health services.
