Africa aviation security & disruption
Airport disruptions, airspace restrictions, aviation security incidents and flight disruption risks across Africa. Each item includes country impact and travel implications for corporate and NGO travellers.
Africa-focused monitoring built on named public sources. Records collected automatically are labelled Source record; items carrying an INGO Advisory assessment are labelled Verified intelligence or Analyst assessment. We do not operate a 24/7 watch floor: feeds refresh continuously and analyst review runs daily, faster during active events.
What actually disrupts African aviation
Most operational pain on African routings comes from four recurring causes: closed or restricted airspace, permit friction, GNSS interference, and ground-phase security at regional airfields.
Conflict-driven airspace closures are the hardest constraint. The Khartoum FIR remains effectively unavailable to civil traffic, displacing overflights into neighbouring FIRs and pushing humanitarian movement into Sudan through Port Sudan and cross-border options from Chad and South Sudan. Sector times and costs rise accordingly, and reopening is not a near-term prospect.
In the central Sahel, the constraint is administrative as much as kinetic. Overflight and landing permissions across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger are subject to political sensitivity, intermittent restrictions and short-notice cancellation. The threat to airliners at altitude is low; the concentrated risk is on the ground at regional airfields with weak perimeter control.
GNSS jamming and spoofing over the southern Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and parts of the Horn is now a persistent flight-safety issue. It is spillover from regional military activity rather than targeting of civil aircraft, but it degrades approach options into Djibouti, Bosaso and Hargeisa and raises crew workload materially.
At major hubs such as Mogadishu's Aden Adde International, the facility itself is comparatively well protected. The exposure sits on the approach roads and in the transition between the airport zone and the city, where indirect fire and IED risk persists and where processing surges add unplanned dwell time.
- Confirm permits 72 hours out
Sahel overflight and landing approvals fail late; plan alternates outside the affected FIRs.
- Brief GNSS-degraded procedures
Assume conventional navaid reversion on Horn of Africa and southern Red Sea approaches.
- The airport road is the threat
Use armoured movement and confirmed escorts for airport–city legs in Somalia; avoid terminal frontage loitering.
- Avoid overnight aircraft stays
At exposed regional airfields, keep turnarounds inside daylight hours wherever schedule allows.

How this stream is built
Every published item is triaged from reputable, openly available feeds and reviewed by an INGO Advisory analyst before it appears here. Where a specific source underpins an item, it is cited on the card. This is founder-led, analyst-reviewed monitoring — not a 24/7 live intelligence feed.
